Hanami [lit. to view flowers] is the happiest time a year in Japan. Around the last week of March and first week of April the season usually reaches Tokyo, and thousands upon thousands of cherry blossom turn into light pink cotton candy that puts a magical glare over the capital. People head for the parks and sit around for hours under the trees, drinking sake and beer and eating bento boxes. We set out to find a perfect spot in Yoyogi Park on the day the sakura trees reached full bloom – with Fredrik and Masato arriving in the park already at 8 in the morning to reserve one of the best seats for us. Yoyogi is one big happy festival during hanami weekends – not to be missed!
